Lake Wabby, Fraser Island, QLD

from $300.00

Once arriving on Fraser Island, we quickly realised that despite being an island (the world’s largest sand island, to be exact), the best swimming is not at the beach. The top spots are in the perched lakes, like Lake Wabby. This is one of the most unique swims we’ve been to and the only one that probably won’t exist in 100 years. Prevailing easterly winds sweep across the island, causing the slow westward migration of Lake Wabby’s dunes. The sand is gradually filling in this emerald lake, so every moment spent here is precious.
