Immediately off the road, the old highway bridge forms a graceful concrete arch 120 feet above a large, inviting pool along Highway 49, just out of Nevada City. Framed by pale gray boulders, the water is clear and green, and you can see right to the bottom. Swimmers sit in the shallows or clamber up onto huge rocks. There’s plenty of space here for a lot of people, and seen from the bridge above, the colorful towels, umbrellas, and inflatable rings create a sumptuous summer scene.
