Muir Woods is an essential stop on any road trip going north along the 101 from San Francisco. Take Highway 101 over the Golden Gate Bridge (it never gets old), then veer down into Sausalito, past the colorful houseboats, and continue into to Muir Woods National Monument, a primeval forest of old-growth redwood trees. Spend some time here, hiking the trails to Cathedral and Bohemian Groves along Redwood Creek. It’s a sleep, peaceful time warp in nature.
